This artwork is reflective of Hunter New England Health's Residential Eating Disorders (REDC) initiative and the beautiful bushland ‘home away home’ on Awabakal country.

Central to the imagery a large gathering circle with people symbols highlights the centre and working together around shared vision towards holistic health outcomes, wellbeing and healing.  The traditional people within the circle depict the REDC team, families and communities, while the two symbols at the core of the design represent respectful relationships and brings a welcome to all.

People and community symbolism extends outward and are interlinked across the design, symbolic of the journey of families to and from the centre, highlighting education and knowledge shared while participating in programs offered at Kurang Gunya, alongside partners and ongoing support within community.  The soft transparent traditional imagery moves freely throughout the artwork, highlighting culture and spirituality, while bringing an acknowledgment to traditional custodians, through the symbol for Elders seen at the top centre of the work.

A backdrop of songlines shares connection to country and the tranquil native bushlands, flora and fauna at the centre, depicted in the traditional leaf design.   Middens, which are mounds of shell discarded around the local waterways by Aboriginal people feasting over thousands of generations, is seen within the artwork alongside water imagery depicting our East Coast and Lake Macquarie.  Warm ochre tones depict the Awabakal as the people of the hills and plains and together this imagery connects and acknowledges tribal groups, across the HNEH district, as it flows outwards capturing country and waterways across their footprint.

Butterflies bring a special message within the artwork, as they highlight the Butterfly Foundation’s support for eating disorders and commitment to changing lives.
